Dylan Spencer, Vigilant Sapphire (ANIMAL & NATURE 2026)

After tracking this stunning little male White-winged Fairywren over several weeks, I was delighted on this morning when he chose a perch beside the path and went into full 'show-off' mode. While normally polished and pristine, on this day he consistently presented his raised crest. I thought it must have been a mating behavior, but with no females in sight, it seems he was actually guarding his patch of coastal heath. This sequence captures his vibrant, spunky personality as he shifts from quiet vigilance to intense concentration, culminating in a spectacular, high-attitude display of feathers. A celebration of a tiny bird with a heap of personality.
