Christine Sweeney, TINOS PILGRIMS (TRAVEL 2025)
Pilgrims have been visiting Tinos Island for centuries to visit the Church of Panagia Evangelistria. August is a particularly busy time for pilgrims as they celebrate the Dormition of the Panagia, or the passing of the Virgin Mary from earthly life, celebrated annually on 15 August. Many pilgrims will make the 800m long journey from the port to the Church on the hill on their hands and knees. I watched and appreciated this man prepare himself in the hot midday sun, then followed his journey. It was extraordinary to experience.
