Andrew Xu, Studies in Solitude (BLACK & WHITE 2026)

This portfolio explores solitude across the animal kingdom not as a profound state of quiet introspection and stillness. Employing a deliberate low-key exposure and a tonal grade anchored in rich charcoal, each frame strips away environmental distraction to suspend the subject in contemplative isolation. Directional raking light sculpts form out of shadow, carving out the architectural sweep of a pelican’s bill, buoyant downy plumage, weathered mammalian fur, and the dense, interlocking scutes of ancient reptilian armour. The restrained exposure aims to transform intimate wildlife portraits into timeless studies.
