Linlin Zhao, Speicherstadt (TRAVEL 2026)

Speicherstadt (or city of warehouses) is Hamburg's famous red brick warehouse district. Built between 1883 and 1927, it is the largest historic warehouse complex in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site blends 19th-century engineering with romantic, medieval-inspired aesthetics. It was built into the River Elbe on thousands of oak poles as a free economic zone in Hamburg's port. The stunning Neo-Gothic red-brick architectures are packed with whimsical decorative elements, including ornate stepped gables, copper-roofed turrets, and glazed accent tiles. Hamburg gets the nickname "Red City" (or Rote Stadt) primarily because of these iconic red brick buildings that dominates the historic waterfront and warehouse districts.
