Location: Remote Tanzania When staying with the Maasai, it is customary to bring a goat/sheep as a gift for the family hosting you. The Maasai treat livestock as currency as well as a resource - preferring to consume their milk and blood, rather than their meat which is a one time affair and therefore reserved for special occasions. The slaughter process is wildly different to how it's done in the west. They suffocate the animal in order to keep the blood inside and then proceed to carefully butcher the animal, slowly draining all the blood into the chest cavity. Once portioned and drained, they char the gallbladder to flavour the blood before drinking it. It was a wild experience to witness and humbling to have been invited to share a meal and photograph the process.
