Glenda Gore, Sentinels in Pastel (CREATIVE 2025)

In this image I am aiming to explore the subtle presence of community lifesavers through an impressionist lens, using a pastel palette and softened detail to evoke the atmosphere of a warm, sun-bleached beach scene. At one side sits a lifesaving tower, steady and unobtrusive, whilst in the other two lifesavers—rendered in diffused strokes of vivid orange-red—stand nearby, partially obscured as if merging with the landscape. The deliberate blurring of form is both an aesthetic and conceptual choice. On busy beaches, lifesavers often blend into the environment—ever-present yet rarely noticed until a moment of need. Through this technique, I aim to mirror that experience: the quiet watchfulness of those who serve, the way they fade into the backdrop of daily life, only to become sharply visible when action is called for. This image is my ode to the quiet vigilance and vital role of our local lifesavers—figures of protection and calm, embedded in the rhythm of the coast.
