Brandon Pasowicz, Rare and Remarkable: Numbats (ANIMAL & NATURE 2025)
The Numbat, one of Australia’s most endangered marsupials. With fewer than 2,000 individuals left in the wild, this small, insectivorous mammal is a symbol of both ecological fragility and quiet resilience. Through this photograph, I aim to draw attention to the numbat’s beauty, vulnerability, and perseverance. Found only in two parts of Western Australia and feeding solely on termites, their habitat has been decimated. I frequently visit the Dryandra Woodlands where their largest population can be found and am delighted to see so many visitors coming in hope of spotting one of these elusive creatures, and the joy it brings to those who can catch a glimpse.
