Robert Anderson, Pied Cormorants (ANIMAL & NATURE 2026)

Pied Cormorants are very dynamic fish hunters and when they catch one they will often toss it around for 20-30 seconds before swallowing it head-first. I have enjoyed capturing photographs of them doing this on several occasions. However, this portfolio highlights some more relaxed behaviours while resting in the hot sun on a reef: gular fluttering, snoozing, yawning and just simply posing beautifully for their portrait. It also shows the range of spectacular facial colours during the breeding season.
