MaryJo Gomez-Jackson, Petal Frequencies (CREATIVE 2025)

"Petal Frequencies" explores the intersection between botanical realism and abstract perception, fusing natural forms with structured geometry. The camellia flower; a symbol of longing and grace, a dialogue between the organic and the constructed; where nature’s fluid beauty intersects with the precision of human design. The camellia blossoms become both subject and medium, layered with translucent gradients, painterly washes, and geometric lattices. The flowers shift between recognition and abstraction, dissolving into a dreamlike field of color and pattern. My intention is to allow the camellia’s silken folds to drift into a current of light, geometry, and memory. Each bloom begins as a photographic truth, then dissolves into translucent gradients, painterly washes, and radial lattices; an interplay between organic softness and precise structure. Magentas and golds advance toward the viewer, while cool blues recede, creating a visual rhythm that feels both intimate and expansive. The work’s layered transparency is deliberate: a way to mimic how perception builds in the mind, each moment overlapping with others until reality and recollection merge. Geometry becomes the invisible architecture beneath nature’s elegance, while the shifting edges and blended textures speak to impermanence. I invite the viewer to slow down, wander through its depths, and feel the quiet pulse of something both fragile and enduring.
