Austin Guthrie, Numbat Portraits (ANIMAL & NATURE 2025)

The numbat, a unique and beautiful creature with their fine stripes, long pointed snout, and that gentle russet colouring against the woodland floor. I was lucky enough to come across this wild numbat in Dryandra Woodland National Park, moving quietly through the leaf litter in search of termites. It paused to sit on a log in the morning sun, giving me the rare chance to observe its striking white stripes at close range. This little series of portraits is a glimpse into the character of one of Australia’s most unique and endangered marsupials.
