Ngaire Hart, Macquarie Island (LANDSCAPE 2025)

Macquarie Island is part of the Subantartic Islands, but is owned by Australia and governed by Tasmania. It is wild, remote and less than 1000 people are allowed to visit it. Cold, foggy day when we arrived. It is an UNESCO World Heritage site in the southwest Pacific Ocean halfway to Antartica. Macquarie Island is one of the cloudest places on Earth with an annual average of only 862 hours of sunshine. Annually 289.4 cloudy days and just 3.5 clear days. It rains 316.7 days including 55.7 snowy days. We were lucky to land twice on this island as the previous cruise spent 3 days off the island and couldn't land due to the bad weather.
