Mark Mortensen, Entering the Infinite (CREATIVE 2025)
This image captures Lindy Lee’s monumental sculpture Ouroboros at the National Gallery of Australia – a striking work inspired by the ancient symbol of a snake consuming its own tail, signifying the eternal cycle of birth, death, and renewal. At four metres tall and weighing 13 tonnes, the sculpture is both commanding and contemplative. Shot at night, the photograph reveals the artwork’s magical transformation after dark, when thousands of perforations in its mirrored surface radiate with light. Using intentional light bursts and reflection, I sought to visually echo the sculpture’s themes of infinity and interconnection. The glowing path leading into the "mouth" of the Ouroboros invites viewers to journey inward, where shadow, light, and mirrored surroundings merge into something cosmic. A creative and technical challenge, this image celebrates the interplay between art, architecture, and the ever-changing environment.
