Lachlan Smith, Creta (BLACK & WHITE 2026)

Crete, Greece's largest and most populous island, draws millions of tourists each year. Outside of the major tourist hotspots on the north coast, a familiar story can be found throughout the island. As jobs and opportunities atrophy, hundreds of small towns and hamlets in the mountains and plains of central and southern Crete are slowly decaying, their residents gradually lost to the inevitable pull of the bigger cities and the money that flows through them. This series explores some of those areas - buildings crumbling, school and store windows smashed, and the remnants of countless communities slowly being lost to time. Shot on 35mm black and white film stock.
