Kate Friebe, Courtship in the mist (ANIMAL & NATURE 2025)

The subtle yet captivating courtship rituals of the White-faced Heron are essential for forming pair bonds and to secure a mate for the breeding season ahead. Males showcase their plumage, can perform aerial displays, and engage in nest-building activities to attract females. Before dawn one morning I was sitting beside the Coomera River, with mist wafting across the water, creating a moody, ephemeral atmosphere. A White-faced Heron landed behind me, fed along the edge of the bank for a while before standing on alert, giving a call, and flying towards a rocky bank in the river where another White-faced Heron was standing. In the swirling mist a courtship dance slowly began between the pair, ending with both holding a large stick together. It was rather special moment being able to observe this behaviour.
