Michelle Bowen, 54°S - "Where the Wildlife Rules!" (TRAVEL 2025)

In the path of the Furious Fifties, at a longitude of 158°E and a latitude of 54°S, lies a small, narrow speck of land in the vastness of the Southern Ocean that is Macquarie Island. Not your normal tourist destination, this island is remote, wet, windy and wild, with an average of over 314 days of precipitation a year. Teeming with prolific wildlife, including millions of penguins and around 100 00 seals, it is hard not to be spellbound by Macquarie Island’s raw and rugged charm.
